West Yellowstone Update

Posted by Matt Liebsch on Dec 5th 2013

Hi Everyone! I wanted to again say thank you for all the support this year. I could not be chasing the Olympics without you.

This past weekend I raced at West Yellowstone and finished 4th. Not quite the result I was looking for but I replaced my 5th best FIS race with a 37 from WYS vs my 44 from last year. My ranking is based on my best 5 FIS races and points are based off strength of field and time back from the winner. The goal for WYS was to get a sub 30 point race. The only guy to get a sub 30 was the race winner, a foreign skier from Sweden. (Matt coming through the lap lane)

Hopefully this next weekend in Silver Star will be a good sub 30 result. I am feeling good and skied well at WYS but the snow was weird 32F new-ish and struggled a bit with ski speed. This next weekend in Silver Star should not be a wax race as the lows will be near -20F and highs only in the single digits?! I love cold racing:)

Brian drove me up here from WYS and was 2nd last weekend! He was bummed that foreign skier got us all, Brian got a 31 point race. But we are excited to race another 15km skate this weekend. (Brian Gregg literally flying to a second place finish)

!!! Also, if anyone has any pilot friends, Brian and I are getting a wild idea to double up this weekend. The 15km skate here in Silver Star is Saturday and there is a 15km cls mass start in Bozeman on Sunday at 10am. The fact that Sunday is a massstart is appealing because the field is likely to stay together a many guys could get a low FIS point race. Right now, Brian and I are looking at having his sister drive us 14hrs through the middle of the night or charting a small plane from Oroville to BZN. We looked and there is not a commercial option available out of Kelowna, BC to BZN. Skiing is nice up here in Silver Star and BG and I are sharing a condo that sleeps 10-12... maybe a pilot that likes to ski?!

It was great to see many of you in WYS, thinking snow!
