Beating the End-of-Winter Blues: Staying Motivated for Next Ski Season

The snow is melting, the ski trails are turning to mush, and suddenly, you’re faced with the question: now what? The end of ski season can feel like a letdown, but it’s also the perfect time to shift gears and start building toward an even better next season. As an avid skier, runner, biker, and all-around year-round mover, I’ve learned that keeping motivation high in the off-season is key. Here’s how to keep the stoke alive!

Ease Into Running—Your Joints Will Thank You

You’ve spent all winter building aerobic fitness with skiing, but that doesn’t mean you should immediately start hammering 10-mile runs. Running is higher impact, and your muscles, tendons, and joints need time to adjust. Start with short, easy runs, and mix in walking if needed. A couple of run days per week, combined with other activities, will help your body adapt without injury. If you feel any weird aches or pains, don’t ignore them! Cross-training with biking, hiking, or elliptical work can keep you moving without the pounding.

Roller Skiing? Pump the Brakes—For Now

Yes, roller skiing is a great way to stay ski-fit, but patience is key. Early spring roads are covered in sand, silt, and debris that can turn your first session into a crash course in road rash. Wait for a couple of solid rainstorms to clean things up before strapping in. In the meantime, cycling or ski-erg workouts can help bridge the gap until conditions improve.

Strength Training: Your Secret Weapon

Skiing is a full-body sport, and maintaining (or improving) your strength in the off-season will pay off when the snow returns. Focus on base strength with exercises like squats, deadlifts, core work, and upper-body endurance. Bonus: a strong body helps prevent overuse injuries when you start ramping up running and roller skiing.

Set Some Fun Goals

Nothing keeps motivation up like having an event to train for. A spring half marathon can give your running purpose, while a summer gravel ride, triathlon, or mountain bike race can keep things exciting. Looking further ahead, fall events like the NorthShore Inline Marathon in Duluth are a great way to keep your endurance high before ski season sneaks back up.

Motivate Yourself with Some New Skis!

Nothing gets you excited for next winter like a fresh pair of skis. There’s something about new gear that makes you want to train harder, ski smoother, and chase bigger goals. And if you really want to set yourself up for success, consider having David Chamberlain hand-pick your skis straight from the factories in Europe. He knows exactly what to look for, ensuring you get the perfect flex and camber for your skiing style. Imagine gliding onto the snow next season with a ski that feels like it was made just for you—now that’s motivation!

And Don’t Forget—Sign Up for the Birkie!

Before you get too wrapped up in all your off-season adventures, make sure to lock in your spot for next year’s American Birkebeiner! Early registration saves you money and gives you something big to look forward to all year.

Spring may feel like a letdown after a great ski season, but it’s really just the start of next year’s adventure. Keep moving, mix it up, and stay excited—before you know it, we’ll be gliding on snow again!
