Gravel, Road, and Triathlon Bikes: The Basic Differences

Gravel, Road, and Triathlon Bikes: The Basic Differences

Gravel: Gravel bikes are designed for mixed surface riding, including gravel, dirt roads, grassy trails and pavement. A gravel bike’s relaxed (comfortable) geometry increases the riders bike stability and creates a comfortable upright riding position. Wider tires add to the ride comfort, absorbing bumpy surfaces and increases ride stability.  These bikes are just plain fun. They roll slower than a road bike and do not handle rugged off road like a mtn bike. Instead they offer the fun and freedom of a bike that can be ridden safely off busy roads. See the Gravel bikes.

Road: Road bikes are built for speed and efficiency on smooth paved roads. Their geometry encourages a more forward leaning position for reduced wind resistance. Their tires are narrower and smoother than Gravel bikes. See the Road bikes.

Triathlon: Tri bikes are designed for aerodynamics and performance in triathlons. Steep seat tube angles position the rider forward into a tucked position onto a lower front end and aero bars. The tires and width are like a road bike. High speed gearing, aero bars and integrated hydration systems define many tri bike set ups. See the Triathlon bikes.
