Wax Your Chain: Why It's a Must for Mountain Bikers

Wax Your Chain: Why It's a Must for Mountain Bikers

By Peter Olejniczak

Lubing your chain has always been a critical part of a happy drivetrain. Eliminate the crunching, clanking and squeaking! That said, it's time to start waxing your mountain bike chain! This “newer” method is often overlooked, because its different… it may take a little extra time than what you are used to. That used to be me… applying some liquid chain lube was WAY quicker. However, I learned it is well worth the time. Waxing your chain significantly improves performance, longevity, and overall riding experience. Here's why:

  1. Easier Cleaning:
  • Repellent Properties: Wax repels dirt and grime, making it easier to clean your chain and keep it in top condition.
  • Less Time Spent Cleaning: With less dirt and grime to deal with, you'll spend less time maintaining your bike.
  1. Enhanced Chain Life:
  • Protection from Wear: Wax acts as a barrier, protecting the chain from dirt, grit, and other contaminants that can accelerate wear.
  • Reduced Stretch: A well-waxed chain is less likely to stretch over time, ensuring optimal shifting performance.
  1. Improved Efficiency:
  • Reduced Power Loss: A well-waxed chain minimizes power loss due to friction, allowing you to make the most of your pedaling efforts.
  • Increased Efficiency: More efficient power transfer means you can ride farther and faster with less effort.
  1. Reduced Friction:
  • Smoother Shifting: Waxing creates a smoother surface on the chain, resulting in more precise and efficient shifting.
  • Increased Speed: Less friction means less energy wasted, leading to a faster ride.

How to Wax Your Chain:

  1. Buy some Chain Wax! Gear West has a number of options in-store
  2. Clean thoroughly: Remove any dirt, grime, and old lubricant from your chain using a degreaser and a brush. I recommend picking up a can of Mineral Spirits from your local hardware store and shaking the chain in a bottle
  3. Apply wax: Make sure to follow the product directions as each may be different. Melt and apply! Popular method - A crock pot from your local thrift store! Some brands have their own “crockpot” contraption for melting and penetrating wax into the chain.
    1. Pour or place wax into Crockpot
    2. Place chain in Crockpot
    3. Put lid on, set temperature to high
    4. After 65 minutes, take lid off Crockpot and agitate chain for 45 seconds

  1. Hang dry: Until the chain is cool
  2.  Install the chain
